In fall 2023, I found myself in a massive arena in Dallas, surrounded by thousands of people, all there for one reason: transformation. I was attending Tony Robbins’ Unleash the Power Within (UPW), an experience that was truly life-changing. One of the most powerful lessons I walked away with was the concept of “change your state” and how it can instantly shift your emotions, mindset, and energy.
Tony teaches that your state dictates how you feel, think, and show up in the world. When you’re in a positive state, you make empowered decisions and attract the best experiences. But when you’re in a negative state, it’s easy to spiral into frustration and stagnation. His approach focuses on three key elements:
Physiology – Your body and energy reflect your emotions. When you change how you move, breathe, and carry yourself, you change your energy.
Focus – Where your focus goes, your energy flows. If you focus on problems, you feel more anxious. If you focus on solutions or gratitude, you feel empowered.
Language – The words you use shape your perception of the world. Shifting from a narrative of limitation to one of possibility creates transformation.
What I found fascinating is how this idea aligns deeply with Ayurveda. Just as Tony Robbins teaches that we can shift our internal state through movement, focus, and language. Ayurveda teaches that our mind, body, and energy are influenced by the balance of our doshas. The key to lasting transformation is learning how to work with your unique constitution to create balance and vitality.
1. Physiology: Move with Purpose
Ayurveda prescribes movement based on your dosha to restore balance:
Vata (Air & Ether): If you feel anxious or scattered, slow, grounding movements like yoga, walking, or stretching help reconnect you to your body. If you feel sluggish, dynamic, energetic movements like dancing or cardio bring balance.
Pitta (Fire & Water): If you feel irritable or intense, cooling activities such as swimming or restorative yoga create calm. To reenergize, strength training or high-intensity workouts can spark motivation.
Kapha (Earth & Water): When feeling sluggish or stuck, vigorous exercises like jumping jacks, fast-paced yoga, or even a cold shower break through inertia. If overwhelmed, gentle movement restores balance.
2. Focus: Mindfulness and Intentions
Where your attention goes, energy flows. Ayurveda teaches us to focus on practices that align with our dosha:
Vata types benefit from mindfulness practices like meditation or gratitude to ground their energy.
Pitta types should focus on letting go of control with visualization, breathwork, and mindfulness to create balance.
Kapha types are best served by energizing breathwork, goal-setting, and intentional action to shift out of stagnation.
3. Language: Mantras and Mindset
The words you speak shape your reality. Ayurveda offers personalized mantras to support balance:
Vata – “I am grounded. I am supported. I am here.”
Pitta – “I embrace ease. I trust the flow of life.”
Kapha – “I am energized. I am inspired. I welcome change.”
